Historical Background
Smithfield’s legacy dates back to 1166 when Peter de Birmingham obtained a charter to establish a market at the site of his moated manor house. This market evolved into the famous Smithfield Market in 1817, which played a crucial role in Birmingham’s economy, serving as a hub for livestock, fruit, and vegetable trade. However, the market’s decline began in the mid-20th century due to changing trade practices, ultimately leading to its closure and demolition in 1975.
